This year’s Seeding the Future breakfast at the Outdoor Retailer show benefited Appalachian Mountain Club, CityWild, Teton Science School, and the Women’s Wilderness Institute. Featured speaker was mountaineer Elliott Boston III who is part of the first African-American team seeking to climb the Seven Summits. Lowa boots and Outdoor Retailer stepped up as sponsors, with additional sponsors including Gore-Tex, Nike ACG, Galyan’s and Leki USA. An estimated $25,000 was raised. SNEWS® View: This breakfast has become a tradition to kick-off the show, but this year was a bit sad. Elliott Boston is a charming man, and one-on-one is a good interview, but he is not a speaker. Not only did he not have a clue about how to tell a story or deliver the nuggets of info the audience wanted (letting the answers to a couple of leading questions die in one sentence), but he also didn’t really know how to market his message to this group. So, despite what could have been a truly riveting talk, many attendees slipped out soon after he began. To make the breakfast a true success, more riveting and motivating speakers should be mandatory — even ones outside the industry — to make the event more of a must-attend.
