There are a lot of balance and wobble boards on the market these days, and it can be difficult to figure out which one is good or bad, or which may simply be better for you than another.
The beauty of the Fitter Classic Balance Board is that it’s taken many of the great characteristics of boards that can cost twice as much (or more), including those that Fitter makes, and puts them in a less expensive model.
Because Fitter is also an educator and promoter of balance-training (note the company tagline, “balance and fitness for life”), the board comes with a little brochure to help you figure out a few basic ways to use it. Lose the brochure? No problem. On the middle of the board, there are seven stick figures showing seven different ways to use it! One tester without any experience using a balance board said they were a real boost for her to learn how to use the board.
Compared to other less-expensive boards that have a one-size-fits-all half-sphere at the bottom that provides the wobble, this classic board has a patented two-level sphere acting as the fulcrum. With a simple twist you can make it easier (lower, for less wobble) or a little more difficult (higher, for more advanced balance training).
There is a patterned surface on the top that works well to make sure a user doesn’t slip off, but may be a drawback if you try to use it for advanced pushups (that would be a big OUCH on the palms). And ignore the “sitting” illustration that shows a user sitting on the board with the heels on it too. You’d have to be about 8 years old to get yourself pretzeled-up into that kind of pose. The brochure could get a bit more detailed and be less of a promotion for balance in general, although it does cover the basics despite some pretty bad pictures.
All of our testers like the ability to use it a footrest at your desk, so you can get occasionally ankle and lower-leg training during the day. Or, if you’re on a conference call or on hold, stand up and do a few balance wobblies to pass the time. And the price is definitely right.
