GearTrends® author's copyright infringement taken seriously

Integrity and trust. They are two of our company's most valued assets. That bond of trust and integrity we have established with our readers and the industries we serve, is something we take very seriously.

Integrity and trust. They are two of our company’s most valued assets. That bond of trust and integrity we have established with our readers and the industries we serve, is something we take very seriously. Despite that, we discovered on Jan. 28 that the author for the GearTrends® 2005 Winter Outdoor magazine article titled “On the Fringe” directly copied two quotes from The B.O.S.S. Report published in late 2004. One quote was attributed to David Ingemie, president of SnowSports Industries America, and the other was attributed to Thomas Laasko, Black Diamond Equipment’s ski line manager.

We have also learned that at no time did the author of our article in fact actually conduct an interview — by email or by phone — with Ingemie or Laasko, despite giving the implication in the article of having done so. Journalism 101 mandates that any material printed in another publication is the property of that publication and cannot be used without permission and certainly cannot be used without attribution.

The entire GearTrends® and SNEWS® teams apologize to Ingemie and Laasko and, most importantly, to all of our readers who trust that what sets us apart is our publication’s integrity, honesty, inside connections and fairness. Because we take issue with others for perceived violations of trust, we must hold ourselves up to the same light.

Our writers are tasked with keeping detailed notes of interviews, never ever reprinting press releases as news, always chasing original material, searching out the inside views from insider sources and, above all, being seen as the source of news and information you turn to when you want the real story. Taking quotes that appeared in another publication for use in a story we are publishing is not even close to the level of journalistic integrity we have established for our team. Steps have been taken to ensure that this level of lazy reporting never happens again.

Our team of reporters and editors represent the crème de la crème of journalists covering the outdoor and fitness industries. We promise to redouble our efforts to be deserving of the trust and confidence you place in us every day.
