>> Retailers — here’s your chance to order a limited-edition run of Chaco Performance sandals and select your own unique webbing design. Augmenting the normal selection of webbing, Chaco is offering retailers a choice of 28 additional patterns for women and 45 patterns for men, any of which can be used for sandals customized specifically for that retailer. The choice of webbing patterns and colors available for the custom program is comprised of existing and past patterns, including those normally reserved for the Z/rivative line as well as some never-before-seen patterns. Custom sandals are built on the men’s or women’s Z/1 or Z/2 platform with either the Colorado or Terreno sole. Since all Performance sandals are made in Chaco’s Paonia, Colo., facility, the company said it is able to produce small runs of sandals, allowing for retailers to customize their Chaco selections. There is a 500-pair limit on custom sandals in any one webbing pattern, so one retailer could buy all 500 and then it is exclusive to that retailer. Or, five retailers could buy 100 each and then it is exclusive to those five retailers. Minimum order is 24 pair of sandals. “We have been getting requests for small runs of unique webbing for years, whether for a special in-store event, or if a certain color is really hot in one part of the country,” said Rich Weight, sales director at Chaco. “But I think this program also responds to a bit of gender-envy; we hear from men who’d like to have some of the women’s webbing patterns as an option and vice-versa.” He continued, “With Chaco’s customization options, the hope is that retailers can offer their consumers the perfect outdoor sandal.” Prices are the same as regular Performance sandals: $90 for Colorado sole and $95 for Terreno sole. >> From April to August, Dagger is sponsoring “Girls at Play,” a national series of kayaking clinics for women at 13 U.S. locations. >> According to a recent Forbes article, the hottest seller at REI isn’t the latest high-altitude tent or techy boot, but the Camper’s Dream Ice Cream Maker. Retailing for $30, the gadget is “a hollow, hard-plastic soccer ball that, when filled with the right ingredients and booted around a campsite, churns out ice cream.” REI CEO Sally Jewell told Forbes that the retailer “blew through 6,500 of these in six months,” adding that for a family trying to get their kids away from the video games and into nature, “every little bit helps.” Also selling well are “glow-in-the-dark frisbees” and “inflatable pink flamingos.” Probably not what REI co-founders Lloyd and Mary Anderson had in mind when they started REI in 1938, but if it sells and gets folks outdoors, who’s to argue.
>> Phil Powers has been named the new executive director of the American Alpine Club (AAC), drawing on his extensive experience in non-profit and educational management to lead the club. Powers’ experience as an educator and mountain guide includes his most recent position as vice president for institutional advancement at Naropa University, where he oversaw all university fund-raising, trustee cultivation and relations, and new program development. Powers also served as chief mountaineering instructor and development/partnerships director for the National Outdoor Leadership School. He is an owner and guide for The Mountain Guides and its Jackson Hole Mountain Guides & Climbing School. He has also led more than 25 expeditions to summit the highest peaks in the world, from K2 in Pakistan’s Karakoram Range to the first ascent of the Washburn Face on Denali. “As an educator and guide, my vision for the American Alpine Club is to expand and improve our ability to meet members’ needs wherever they are, geographically and in terms of their growth as individuals and outdoors enthusiasts. I want to ensure the development of this sport continues to meet young climbers’ needs, and support the diversity of people our membership represents, all of whom love mountaineering and climbing, but who vary in so many ways,” said Powers. He assumes management of the 7,000-member club on May 2.
>> PPA is asking its members to submit nominations for inductees to the new International Whitewater Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was created to recognize and honor those individuals who have achieved outstanding accomplishments in, or made significant contributions to, whitewater sports nationally and internationally. PPA Executive Director Matt Menashes is on the board of governors for the Hall of Fame and the association is an affiliate organization. All nominations must be submitted through affiliate organizations in order for nominees to be considered. Nominations are being accepted for four categories: pioneer — an individual who made significant contributions to any area of whitewater, who is no longer living; explorer — an individual, currently or previously engaged in any area of whitewater exploration; champion — athlete or coach, currently or previously engaged in any competitive discipline; and advocate — an individual who is, or has, contributed to the advancement of whitewater. >> Flemming Henriksen has been named The North Face’s general manager for the Nordic Region, with responsibility for all sales and marketing programs for the brand in Sweden, Denmark, Greenland, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Baltics. He will plan, direct, control and coordinate the sales of products and services for these countries out of the VF Nordic offices in Helsingor, Denmark. Prior to joining The North Face management team, Henriksen was sales manager of the brand’s agent for Denmark and Greenland, Fritidsagenten, for over six years, working directly with all key accounts.
>> Outdoor Research has hired Treeline Sales, LLC to handle the Exped brand in the Pacific Northwest. The team consists of Tim Andis, Dana Sterling and Ray Thomas, who will cover Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.
