3Mâ„¢ Thinsulateâ„¢ Insulation meets the rigid standards of Oeko-Tex® and has been certified since 1998. The Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 was introduced in the 1990s as a response to the general public’s need for information about textiles and assurance that the substances used to manufacture textiles posed no health risk. The Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 was developed based on existing test standards to assess the human ecological quality of textiles. Thinsulate insulation sold in Europe has been Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Product 1 Class certified since 1998. This means Thinsulate insulation substances and properties meet the testing requirements for intended use in garments and footwear.
Thinsulate insulation products sold for global distribution have been Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Product Class 1 certified since 2002.*
Oeko-Tex® certification is critical, and certified Thinsulate insulation products passed the most stringent Product Class 1 standards. This means Thinsulate insulation is safe for direct contact with the skin of babies. Oeko-Tex® is the Industry Restricted Substance List (RSL) standard for textiles used in outdoor apparel and footwear.
Oeko-Tex® standards have become stricter over the years to reflect the changing and expanded government regulations of various countries. Up until the introduction of the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, there was neither a reliable product label for consumers to assess the human ecological quality of textiles nor a uniform safety standard for companies within the textile and clothing industry that enabled a practical assessment of potential harmful substances in textile products. The Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 pioneered the use of a meaningful Restricted Substance List and remains the preeminent RSL standard.
