ADIDAS OUTDOOR ATHLETES MAYAN SMITH-GOBAT AND LIBBY SAUTER SET WOMEN’S SPEED RECORD CLIMBING THE NOSE ROUTE ON EL CAPITAN
LOS ANGELES (Oct. 31, 2014) – adidas Outdoor (www.adidas.com), the athletic brand in the outdoors, announced today its athletes Mayan Smith-Gobat and Libby Sauter set the women’s speed record climbing The Nose, an iconic, extremely exposed route on El Capitan (3000’ vertical face) in Yosemite National Park, Oct. 31, 2014. They climbed the route in four hours and 43 minutes, beating their previous record of five hours and two minutes, which they set Oct. 28, 2014.
“Mayan and Libby are very skilled and determined and have trained very hard to break their own record again, which was already a truly amazing feat,” said Greg Thomsen, managing director adidas Outdoor US. “We could not be more proud of them and this additional accomplishment coming just three days after breaking their past record shows their great talent and passion.
The summit of The Nose stands at 3,000 feet and was first ascended in 1958 by a team of climbers, including Warren Harding, Wayne Merry and George Whitmore. This ascent took 45 days, and is considered a historic event in modern rock climbing. The Nose is considered to be the most famous rock climbing route in North America, and the first one-day ascent was completed in 1975 by John Long, Jim Bridwell and Billy Westbay.
