RED LODGE, MT (October 16, 2008) –To the average American, the North and South Poles are faraway regions almost fantasy-like in nature – distant homes to polar bears, seals, penguins and, of course, lots of snow. For legendary adventurer Doug Stoup, these icy environments are a second home.

Over the past 10 years, Stoup has completed 17 Antarctic and seven North Pole expeditions in the name of education, the environment, philanthropy and, of course, a love of the great outdoors.

Through his ICE AXE Expeditions , the Truckee, CA-based explorer has guided a multitude of clients across the frozen Arctic Ocean and Antarctica, raising millions of dollars and creating awareness for important charities and even assisting in the capture of scientific data on global warming.

On Stoup’s must-pack list each time he ventures out to the remote regions? The Original Chair from Crazy Creek – the classic, portable outdoor chair that’s provided the perfect seat for both amateur and world-class adventurers alike for more than 20 years.

“The Crazy Creek Original is a must on all of my expeditions,” said Stoup. “I use it in the tent and in the vestibule while cooking all of my meals – it works great as extra insulation in minus 40-degree temperatures. I’ve even personalized it with my ICE AXE logo, and it’s been a favorite among the clients.”

In addition to his favorite Crazy Creek chair, Stoup brings along several other pieces of vital equipment that assist in making his adventures more than just memorable experiences. Unique to Stoup’s ICE AXE Expeditions is daily audio and video coverage via satellite, which allows family, friends, schools and sponsors to follow the team’s progress over the internet. Aptly named, the pioneering Education through Exploration program brings the chilly, distant destinations into the classroom – to the benefit of thousands of students – and even lets Stoup interact through email questions and call-ins.

A dedicated humanitarian, Stoup also requires that each ICE AXE Expedition client adopt a charity of their choice for which they’ll raise awareness during the trip. As a result, millions of dollars have been raised for inner city Canadian students and Outward Bound U.K., among other causes.

“Showing adventurers how they can make an impact in their own communities is a win-win for everyone involved,” said Stoup.

But the impact Stoup strives for is even more far-reaching – it’s scientific. In 2005, Stoup partnered with several polar friends for one of his most prideful expeditions, Poletrack. Together, the team developed weather beacons to track ice movement, temperature and barometric pressure on the Arctic Ocean. Now used by the Arctic Buoy Program, the beacons provide significant climate change data to scientists.

What’s next for Stoup? In addition to two more ICE AXE expeditions scheduled for 2008, a lot more of the same.

“I want to dedicate my life to humanitarian work, partnering with scientists and educational organizations to help mankind,” he said. “I love pushing the physical and mental limits.”
