Blue Hill, Maine – Hydro-Photon, Inc. (HPI) has received an equity investment from Asahi Kasei Corporation (AK) of Tokyo, Japan. Hydro-Photon, Inc. manufactures and distributes SteriPEN ultraviolet (UV) handheld water purifiers, the leading portable water purifiers in the outdoor market. AK is a global leader in production of chemicals, fibers, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, and electronic devices.

SteriPEN is sold at leading outdoor retailers in the United States and abroad and is widely used by international travelers and preparedness advocates. The innovative water purifiers provide a fast and easy alternative to pumps and chemicals traditionally used for treating water in the outdoors as well as an alternative to water in plastic bottles in areas with poor water quality. “Just stir the UV lamp in water and SteriPEN purifies a liter in 90 seconds. SteriPEN is the only portable water treatment to carry the Water Quality Association’s Gold seal certifying that it purifies water safely and effectively against EPA standards,” said Miles Maiden, CEO of HPI.

“The AK investment is earmarked for increasing sales, new business development, and development of ‘cutting-edge’ products. Moving forward HPI will provide additional support for our retail partners by creating more exposure and brand awareness in our key markets.” said HPI President Neil MacKay. “Additionally, with AK we will evaluate and pursue opportunities in new and growing markets.”

“We’re taking a close look at needs in the portable water treatment market. Our development team is excited about meeting those needs by incorporating new game-changing technology into future products,” said Miles Maiden. “This is going to be an exciting space,” he added.

“AK’s investment demonstrates our enthusiasm for the SteriPEN product line and our confidence in the ability of the HPI team to continue development of innovative products.” said Steven Berger, Director of New Business Development for Asahi Kasei America. “We look forward to helping define what comes next in UV water purification technology.”
