A non-profit foundation that encourages women who’ve endured life-altering setbacks to unleash their ‘inner Athlete’ invites active audiences to celebrate their recovery and those of others via a challenging hike followed by a resort getaway
(San Diego, CA – September 3rd, 2014) – – The Project Athena Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit foundation that encourages women who have endured life-altering setbacks to unleash the ‘Athlete and Adventurer’ within and complete the journey of a lifetime, is still accepting applications from Survivors as well as fundraisers for their Mount San Jacinto Climb in Palm Springs, California to be held from September 19th – September 21st.
Adventurers will trek alongside Survivors, including two cancer Survivors, who tackle the 8,500 foot challenging climb as part of their recovery from medical setbacks. The icing on the cake will include gorgeous views, a tram ride down to the bottom of the mountain and two (2) nights of accommodations and meals at a Palm Springs resort.
Project Athena was founded by the recently named CNN Hero, Robyn Benincasa. Also a ten-time Ironman Finisher, three-time Guinness Endurance Paddling World Record Holder and World Champion Adventure Racer, Benincasa was inspired to create Project Athena as a result of her own medical setbacks of two complete hip replacements and the gratitude of being able to go on “adventures” again. Despite the setbacks, Benincasa wanted dreams such as trekking across the Grand Canyon or climbing Mount San Jacinto to become reality through Project Athena.
Benincasa comments, “the mission of the Foundation is to put Athenas ina position to inspire and amaze themselves – It’s not about getting back to what they were, it’s about being the very best of what they are today.”

ABOUT PROJECT ATHENA
Project Athena is a 501c3 non-profit foundation that encourages women who’ve endured life-altering medical setbacks to unleash the Athlete and Adventurer within and complete the journey of a lifetime—whether that’s to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, cross the finish line of an Ironman triathlon, or fall into the arms of a proud family at the end of a local 5K. Project Athena provides travel expenses, entry fees, coaching, equipment and, most importantly, the encouragement and inspiration to help strong, amazing women make that life-affirming transition from Survivor to Athlete. www.projectathena.org
