Bergans of Norway Announces New Conservation Alliance Support and Latest CSR Protocols
Bluesign® certified, organic materials and responsible sourcing are top priorities worldwide
LONGMONT, CO. – August 29, 2014 – Technical outdoor apparel and backpacking brand, Bergans of Norway today announced it has joined The Conservation Alliance and confirmed their corporate responsibility protocols. With a long history of exploring new frontiers, Bergans places a priority on responsibly protecting and serving the outdoors, both as individuals and in their global business decisions.
Since its inception in 1989, the Alliance has contributed over $13 million to grassroots conservation groups throughout North America. As a member of the Conservation Alliance, Bergans of Norway will play a key role in the distribution of Conservation Alliance grant funds, and will also have the opportunity to nominate two specific projects and cast one ballot during each bi-annual grant funding cycle.

The Conservation Alliance’s mission is “to engage businesses to fund and partner with organizations to protect wild places for their habitat and recreation values.” The Conservation Alliance is a group of outdoor industry companies that disburses its members’ annual membership dues to grassroots environmental organizations working to preserve and protect natural places. They direct funding to community-based campaigns to protect threatened wild habitat, preferably where outdoor enthusiasts recreate. The Alliance was founded in 1989 and boasts more than 185 member companies, and plans to disburse $1.6 million in 2014.
Patterson continues, “We know the choices we make when designing our products greatly effect the environment and the social systems surrounding manufacturing. Consequently, we have developed and actively work with strict requirements on numerous material types, including wool, down, recycled materials, leather, organic cotton, and nano technology; and strive for bluesign® certification on all our products.”
Below are summaries of Bergans efforts (the company’s full CSR report can be found on www.bergans.com).
Wool – Bergans requires that all Merino wool product suppliers provide certificates stating that their wool comes from non-mulesing farms. The term “Mulesing” refers to a painful wool shearing procedure sometimes performed on Australian sheep in order to avoid flea strikes.
Down – Live plucking refers to taking the down from live geese, a practice that is used in some parts of the down industry. Force-feeding the geese is another issue sometimes practiced in the production of foie gras. In addition, the company collects certificates of compliance from the China Down Federation.
Leather – Bergans requires that leather used in its products be a bi-product from the food industry, suppliers are to provide information about the supply chain of leather as far as they are able to, preferably all the way to farm level. Where possible, Bergans strives to have tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group. Bergans uses only synthetic fur.
Recycled Materials – When possible Bergans chooses recycled materials for their products. This is most often recycled polyester or recycled wool. Recycling can be either from post-consumer goods (used garments/textiles/plastics) or from post-production (waste/spill from production process).
Nano-technology – Bergans currently does not use products with Nano-Technology. Nanotechnology means the manipulation of matter on an atomic and molecular scale in order to create new materials and properties. This is a decision the company has made based on the fact that the research on what effects it might have on people and the environment is still limited.
Bluesign® – Bergans is a bluesign system partner. The bluesign standard is a standard the company’s suppliers can work with and get approved by, which ensures that only safe substances are allowed in production, and that reduces resource use and emissions during the production process.
Bergans’ quality control program controls products for any risk to the health and safety of its customers in terms of both functionality and chemicals. Bergans adheres to special requirements on all children products; children carriers, tents and Ally canoes.
Bergans produces technical and high performance products, which are often dependent on specific chemicals to ensure the performance customers demand: water repellence, windproof and breathability, as well as physical properties such as comfort, durability and lightweight. Bergans aims to ensure that no Bergans product contains substances that are harmful to workers, customers or to the environment.
