Eneko Llanos shatters the men’s competition on his home turf in Spain, earning his tenth historic win in Zarautz while female BH teammate, repeats her 2011 victory as the women’s Zarautz champion.

As predicted, Eneko Llanos and Catriona Morrison took the top spots on the podium in the Zarautz Triathlon held on Saturday under intense rain. Both were far superior to their rivals, demonstrating that this is one of their favorite races. The race was held as a duathlon due to a jellyfish plague that forced the suspension of the swimming segment and the modification of the course, which finally consisted of a 9-kilometre footrace, 82 on bicycle and the final 14 on foot.

In the men’s category, Llanos proved unbeatable from the get-go, inserting himself at the lead of the pack right from the start. BH athlete, Mikel Elgezabal chased after the leaders and remained in the top pack of athletes. During the cycling portion, Llanos on his G6 BH Bike, increased his lead but was cautious as the course was very slick due to the heavy rainfall.

Over the last segment of the course, Eneko Llanos continued to expand the distance over his rivals, crossing the victory line with a time of 3:42:50, almost 6 minutes ahead of Agirresarobe and BH athlete Mikel Elgezabal who received a 3rd place podium finish.

Eneko Llanos continues his great tri season, earning his third major victory; following wins at Ironman® Melbourne and Mallorca, a 2nd place finish at the International Abu Dhabi Triathlon and 3rd place at the Ironman 70.3 Austria. These victories have provided him with the necessary points to qualify for the Ironman Championship in Kona.

For the women’s race, Catriona Morrison who was out the entire 2012 season with physical rehab from a crash and achilles surgery on both legs, is once again back and racing in top form. Fresh from her Ironman St Croix 70.3 victory, she led the race in Zarautz from start to finish and has proved herself as a force to be reckoned with. The Scottish athlete wanted to demonstrate her superiority to the pack, leading the Zarautz Triathlon from the beginning. Only Czech athlete, Radka Vodickova stayed with her during the beginning of the foot race but even before reaching the bicycle transition, Morrison was alone out front and her victory was never in jeopardy. As the race advanced, the British champion increased her lead over the other athletes, racing for the other podium positions. Catriona Morrison crossed the victory line with a time of 4:0916, and earned her second Zarautz championship.
