Scotts Valley, California (October 1, 2021) —Archer Components continues to shift the paradigm of wireless electronic components in the bike industry with its new Sprint Battery upgrade for the D1x Trail that increases shift speed by up to 50%, matching the speed of the SRAM AXS electronic groupset.
Since 2015 Archer Components has been at the forefront of wireless shifting, constantly innovating new ideas and also upgrading their advanced systems. In redeveloping the power supply for the D1x Trail, they shrunk the size of the shifter batteries to fit an extra cell in the circuit, creating a significant power increase for noticeably quicker shifting.
Having originally designed their system with the intent of operating at higher voltages for e-bikes, the team at Archer knew that the chainstay-mounted shifter could take the increase with no changes needed to the circuitry. That allowed them to increase the system voltage via a 3-cell setup from 7.4v (standard 2-battery system) to 11.1v for up to 50 percent faster shifting. Existing D1x Trail shifter users can order the new Sprint Battery upgrade kit — which includes 3 batteries, a longer red anodized battery door, and a new 4-position charger — however, the standard 2-cell battery system will continue to provide smooth-shifting performance so there’s no immediate need to buy the new battery kit unless the boost in shifting speed is desired.
In addition to the new faster e-shifting, Archer’s technology also enables you to tune each individual shift point of your rear derailleur – an industry first. This feature means that even with a bent hanger or wonky cassette you can still have smooth shifting across your cassette. Plus, it allows derailleurs to work through their entire range, rather than being confined to the preset parameters of the shifters. This means the D1x Trail can work with any derailleur and any size cassette, regardless of the brand, model, etc., from 2 to 20 speeds! You can even mix and match brands.
The new Sprint Battery power supply gives riders approximately 20 hours of ride time per charge (or ~10,000 shifts, whichever comes first). Battery level can be easily checked trailside on the shifter or using the Archer app.
“We are always looking for ways to upgrade the D1x and we knew the ability to increase speed would be a relatively easy upgrade,” says Archer founder Devin Carlson. “Electronic shifting has always come at a high price before this, and we wanted to make an upgrade for existing customers affordable and offer the two versions the standard and fast system. We’ve seen great success with our D1x, and we’re confident the new Sprint batteries will be equally well received.”
Archer continues to expand its product line; currently under development/testing are new shifters and remote designs for e-bikes, mountain bikes and gravel bikes.
The Archer Sprint Battery upgrade kit ($59.99) includes a Lithium-ion Rechargeable 3.7v Sprint Battery pack, an updated battery door, and a 4-position USB charger. The Sprint batteries will also be available as a backup set of cells without the battery door and charger ($39.99). Both are available online at Archer Components and will be sold at the Oct. 7-10 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California. If you’ll be Sea Otter, stop by booth R6 for a full run-through of all the Archer products.
