Encinitas, Calif. (March 17, 2021) – The Mackintosh Academy in Boulder, CO is an independent school that had always taken students outdoors for at least some parts of the day, but in the 2020–2021 school year it had committed to nearly all outdoor learning to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19.
Being based in the mountain west, staying outside late fall, all winter and early spring would be a challenge for Mackintosh Academy’s faculty and students. The school built outdoor learning spaces, purchased portable heaters, and asked kids to layer up and dress warmly, and then they discovered Selk’bag. The sleeping bags with arms and legs are the perfect solution for keeping kids warm and focused on the learning at hand. Currently, about half of the school’s students and teachers are using Selk’bag to stay warm and safe outside during class and the school keeps several bags available for borrowing when needed.
JJ Morrow, Head of School of Mackintosh Academy – Boulder noted, “Based in Boulder, our K-8 program has always been a little at the mercy of the Colorado elements, but when COVID-19 hit, we knew we had to take proactive action. The discovery of Selk’bag has been a gift that keeps giving. We’re now able to keep our learners and teachers comfortably outside all year in order to be as safe as possible. Teachers love how students can concentrate better wrapped in the cozy warmth. I love how teachers are able to be more comfortable during their long days teaching outside. Selk’bags have also made school more playful and fun!”
Selk’bag worked with the Mackintosh Academy to ensure that their students, whose families come from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, all have access to warmth and comfort, as well as the staff who are outside with the kids. The school has found that one Selk’bag is often easier for kids to wear than remembering their gloves, hats, snow pants and jackets.
“We are so happy to be able to help the kids and teachers at the Mackintosh Academy,” said Cristobal Murillo, founder and CEO of Selk’bag. “Their innovative spirit along with their flexibility and resourcefulness is something we admire here at Selk’bag. The future of the planet depends on our kids being able to continue to learn and grow, and when you have a product that’s perfect to help that goal in weird times like these (and into the future), it’s our honor and privilege to help.”
Selk’bag enjoyed working with Mackintosh Academy so much, it launched a collaboration program open to schools nationwide to help keep kids warm in outdoor classrooms wherever they’re needed.
