Original Buff Headwear is aiming for the roof of the world this spring with internationally renowned mountaineer Robert Link and his mountain guide service, Mountain Link. As a new sponsor, Buff will supply Mountain Link’s 2006 Mt. Everest expedition with Original Buff and Polar Buff Headwear to combat the cold temperatures and inhospitable weather the team will encounter during their summit bid.
The team at Mountain Link contacted Buff after Mountain Link guide J.J. Justman discovered the benefits of using a Buff on his successful 2004 Everest summit bid.
“I first discovered the Buff when fellow Mountain Link guide Lhawang Dhondup gave me one a few years ago,†said Justman. “After the first time I used it, I was sold. I was amazed at how well Buff performed.â€
Justman was so impressed by Buff’s attributes on his 2004 Everest ascent, he requested Buff Headwear for the entire team on the 2006 attempt.
“The majority of the time while I’m mountaineering, my head gets cold. I’ll put on a hat and then my head gets too warm. I take it off, and I’m cold. With Buff, that doesn’t happen – it’s just the right weight,†said Justman. “If I’m hot, I put on the Buff to wick sweat. If I’m cold, I put it on to preserve heat. Most of the time, I forget it’s even on my head.â€
The Mountain Link team is leaving for Nepal on March 24 and expects to arrive at Everest Base Camp on April 7. Anyone interested in tracking the team’s progress can follow along at www.mountain-link.com, where team members will post photo and video dispatches from their expedition.
Founder of the Mountain Link International Guiding Service, Robert Link is a notable figure in North American Mountaineering. A 25 year veteran in the guiding industry, Link has participated in several successful first ascents including an ascent of Kangchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. Link also made the summit of Everest in 1990 as part of the Everest Peace Climb, where three world super powers, China, the Soviet Union and the United States, cooperated to climb the mountain. To this day, the 1990 Everest Peace Climb stands as the most successful expedition on Everest.
