Continuing their role as a leader in raising
environmental awareness and access, Chaco footwear, in conjunction with Rock
Creek Outfitters and Alabama Outdoors, recently raised over $4,200 for the
Southeastern Climbers’ Coalition and the Carolina Climbers’ Coalition. The
funds were raised through the sale of custom Chaco Performance sandals at
the 2005 Triple Crown Bouldering Series as part of an effort to help gain
permanent public access to bouldering, climbing and hiking areas in the US.
Proceeds from sandal sales at the Triple Crown event were originally
earmarked for donation toward the purchase of Rumbling Bald, a popular
climbing area previously unreachable because of private property access
issues. However, thanks to negotiations between the Carolina Climbers’
Coalition and the State of North Carolina, Rumbling Bald will become a State
Park. This development freed up the proceeds from the Chaco sandal sales to
go toward the purchase of Laurel Knob, a 1,200-foot tall granite dome
located in Jackson County, NC that also happens to be the tallest crag east
of the Mississippi.
Gaining and maintaining access for outdoor recreation is very important to
Chaco, who together with the help of area retailers like Rock Creek and
Alabama Outdoors will put close to $20,000 into direct action causes in 2006
in the Southeast alone.
The only outdoor bouldering series in the country, the Triple Crown serves
as a vehicle and example for drawing attention to climbing access and
issues. Based in the Southeast, competitors come from all over the country
to participate. For more information or to register for the Triple Crown
Bouldering series, go to www.triplecrownbouldering.org.
