(Grand Junction, CO – July 28, 2011) The award-winning non-profit trail organization, Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA), announces it will receive a $5,000 grant from Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI).
Saturday, July 30 at 11am, the staff of the Grand Junction REI will present $20,000 in grant awards to deserving, local non-profit organizations. COPMOBA will receive $5000.
In addition to COPMOBA, the Colorado National Monument Association, Grand Mesa Nordic Council and the Colorado Canyons Association will each receive $5,000 to help them in their work to promote outdoor recreation. Representatives from each organization will be on hand to talk about their projects.
“REI has been a terrific partner to COPMOBA over the years,†said Scott Winans, Board President of COPMOBA. “Their dedication to the local trail community is impressive and appreciated. We are honored to have been invited to apply for their grant cycle, and are equally humbled by the company of grantees.â€
The COPMOBA grant moneys will help build a developmental skills trail at the North Fruita Desert “18 Road†trail area. The trail will be a beginner-level trail with signage modeled after the “Rustler’s Loop†and “Kid’s Meal†trails. With the inception of the “Rustler’s Loop†trail in 1997, COPMOBA was the first mountain bike trail organization to develop an interpretive trail. According to the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), this type of trail has since been modeled-after and has promoted mountain biking to youth and adults the world over.
According to Marea Goodman, REI Outreach Specialist, “Part of our corporate mission is to give back to the communities in which we are present. This is a thrilling time of year for us. We encourage folks to join us at the award celebration, and learn more about these deserving organizations located in our backyard!â€
Join REI and their grantees Saturday, July 30th from 11am – 1 pm at the REI store 644 North Avenue. Light refreshments will be served. As an added bonus, the KAFM 88.1 “Desert Cruiser†will be on hand and $20 raffle tickets will be available to purchase.
Call Marea Goodman-Ross at REI 970-254-8970 or email mgoodma@rei.com for more information on the event.
