STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (March 3, 2017) – Big Agnes, the Steamboat Springs-based outdoor brand, today announced it has been awarded the 2017 Backpacker Editors’ Choice Award (Gold) for the redesigned Copper Spur HV UL4 tent. The award is given annually to products in recognition of outstanding innovation in design, materials and performance.

“This marks our tenth Editors’ Choice Award since our brand started 15 years ago,” said Bill Gamber, Big Agnes president and co-founder. “This is the first time we redesigned the Copper Spur since it launched to make it bigger, stronger and lighter and this award is evidence that these changes drastically improve one of our best selling tents.”

Backpacker editor-in-chief Dennis Lewon and his staff presented Big Agnes with the award at the annual Outdoor Retailer Winter Market on Jan.10, 2017, in Salt Lake City.

The Backpacker Editors’ Choice Awards, bestowed annually since 1993, honor the products that Backpacker editors have chosen as the best of the year, based on months of trail testing by teams of experienced hikers and climbers. With no set categories for the awards and no set number of recipients, the products and the testing process drive the award categories.

For the first time, the double-door Copper Spur series has been redesigned from the ground up to offer 20 percent more volume at a reduced weight. The Copper Spur HV UL4, which weighs 5 pound and 3 ounces, features a new pole structure that improves structural strength. It is built with a nylon featuring random rip-stop and a high weave count that improves durability and reduces weight.

Backpacker gear reviews set the benchmark by which all others are measured,” said Lewon. “That’s because no other magazine or website conducts field testing as rigorously or impartially as our crew, which has years of backcountry experience and expertise.”
