BOULDER, Colo., (January 14, 2020) — Continuing their dedication to sustainable practices, Crescent Moon Snowshoes is gearing up for their award-winning Eva and Luna foam snowshoes to go biodegradable and through the acquisition by Dunn-Rite Products, will transition production from Colorado to Indiana.
Launching for the 2020/2021 winter snow sports season, Crescent Moon Snowshoes’ new Eco-Plastic foam is made from non-edible foods, such as corn or potato starch, including food waste products. Unaffected by temperature and humidity, yet when disposed of the new Eco-Plastic foam degrades at a rate of 50% in just 4 months and 100% in one year. Designed to withstand temperatures of -20 to 140 degrees Celsius and certified non-toxic by SGS, Eco-Plastic requires no additional equipment or cost to manufacture.
“We’re always looking to improve our snowshoes,” says Jake Thamm, co-founder and president of Crescent Moon Snowshoes. “Creating the most environmentally-friendly product we can, without compromising quality, has always been a big goal of ours. Yes, our foam snowshoes were already recyclable, but we wanted to take it a step further. Our foam snowshoes made with the new Eco-Plastic foam look and feel exactly the same, but now make it even easier to reduce waste. It is important to us that we do our best to minimize the ecological footprint on the lands where we recreate.”
While additional details on the new biodegradable foam in the Eva and Luna snowshoes are being developed, Crescent Moon is proud to continue to push innovation in the snowshoe arena and seize the opportunity to reduce their environmental impact.
Moreover, Crescent Moon Snowshoes was recently acquired by Dunn-Rite, based in Elwood, Indiana. A third generation, family-owned business specializing in summer water-recreation products, Dunn-Rite is expanding their manufacturing facilities into cold-weather water-based fun. Established in 1983, Dunn-Rite has a long history of developing innovative products of the highest quality and will continue to apply these values and principles to every Crescent Moon snowshoe made. Thamm will remain to support the company and its products, during and after the transition of ownership, to ensure there is no disruption in business operations.
“We are thrilled to have acquired such an incredible brand,” says Tanner Dunn, vice president of Crescent Moon Snowshoes. “Crescent Moon has developed unique offerings and established a highly respected legacy. We see huge growth potential in the running categories, with the Luna foam snowshoe and are eager to invest and support the opportunities available to Crescent Moon, while driving new momentum for an inventive, industry-leading brand.”
“Change is necessary for growth, but finding the right fit isn’t always easy,” says Thamm. “I’m confident we’ve found the right team with Dunn-Rite and know they will continue the legacy that Crescent Moon has built. I’m looking forward to Crescent Moon’s bolstered capabilities by this new investment in product development and distribution. It’s an exciting time for the company and for the snowshoe industry.”
