Dohm Headwear Introduces Otto Beanie New for Fall 2014
Distinctly stylish Merino wool hats handmade using eco-friendly processes and US-sourced Merino
Longmont, Colorado –(July 23, 2014) – Dohm Headwear, the signature knitwear brand of Icebox Knitting, introduces the Otto beanie new for Fall 2014. From ranch to garment, the Otto is the picture of old world craftsmanship and sustainability.
“We embrace tradition and craft in everything we do, right down to the minutia,” explains Christopher Epp, lead designer with Dohm Headwear. “This is why we source the highest quality, natural fibers from local people who share our dedication.”
Over a century ago, Basque sheepherders grazed livestock on the high plains of Wyoming, a tradition that continues today on a co-op of family owned ranches. Every member ranch is dedicated to sustainable ranching and sound animal husbandry. This rugged mountain climate is the source for the Rambouillet Merino wool used in Dohm’s Otto beanie.
The raw wool is processed at a spinning mill with the same acute attention to detail that has become the trademark of all Dohm products. “Typically the spinning process is an environmental nightmare that involves harsh chemicals and metal based dyes, creating toxic byproducts and using obscene amounts of water,” says Epp. “But typical is not something we embrace.”
“These vintage, hand powered machines enhance the fabric’s character in a way that’s impossible to achieve with modern computer controlled equipment,” continues Christopher. “We stay true to the traditions and creativity of the trade, and that’s part of what makes it so special.”
Wool for the Otto hat is processed in a small batch facility using natural citrus-based cleaners to scrub the raw wool, vegetable based oil for spinning, and natural dyes for coloring. Water used in the spinning process is treated and recycled on site in a closed loop system. Finished cones of yarn are carefully knit on antique machines powered and operated by skilled artisans.
Conscientiously crafted with an attention to quality and tradition seldom seen today, the Otto beanie will be available for the Fall 2014 / Winter 2015 season at specialty outdoor, snow sports and everywhere quality, made in the USA goods are sold. To learn more, please visit DohmUSA.com.
