Boulder, Colo. – Elevation Outdoors Magazine, the essential guide to the Rocky Mountain outdoor lifestyle, has selected Doug Schnitzspahn to serve as Editor-in-Chief. Doug will join the home office in Boulder, Colorado, as the newest addition to Summit Publishing’s expanding team.
“Doug is the perfect fit for this position,†says Blake DeMaso, President of Summit Publishing. “He has a decade of industry experience, extensive gear knowledge, and a keen environmental focus. Most importantly, he has been active in the Colorado outdoor community most of his life. We’re really excited to have Doug as the guiding voice of our new regional magazine.â€
Prior to joining Elevation Outdoors, Schnitzspahn worked as executive editor of Hooked on the Outdoors, and he is currently the editor of the Outdoor Retailer Show Dailies. As a freelance writer, he has contributed to Outside, Backpacker, Men’s Journal, Islands, SNEWS, Skiing, Powder, Bike, The Mountain Gazette and High Country News among other publications. His writing has been honored with a fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts and noted in Best American Essays. Schnitzspahn’s experience also includes years of building trails and fighting wildfires for the U.S. Forest Service and environmental advocacy efforts in conjunction with The Wilderness Society and Sierra Club.
“I’m a fan of what Summit Publishing has done back east with Blue Ridge Outdoors, and I’m excited to expand that energy into a publication focused on Colorado,†says Schnitzspahn. “I think outdoor enthusiasts here have been waiting for a local magazine that will speak not just to our love of outdoor sports but more so to our unique lifestyle. We are just as concerned about grassroots activism, microbrews, and new technology as we are about singletrack, red pointing, and powder stashes.â€
Elevation Outdoors Magazine – a free bimonthly publication reaching 100,000 readers across Colorado – will release its inaugural issue in February 2009. Each issue will feature the best in outdoor sports, trends, gear, travel, music, and environmental news.
