SCHILLER PARK, Ill. (Feb. 28, 2008) – Members of Equinox Fitness Clubs throughout the United States celebrated American Heart Month by raising heart rates and funds for heart health through the company’s first Treadmill Mile-A-Thon. Equinox and Life Fitness pledged to match runners and walkers $1 for every mile logged in one day on Life Fitness treadmills. The effort from thousands of exercisers tracked 24,502 miles to raise $24,502 for the American Heart Association, the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke.
“The Mile-A-Thon is a great incentive for our members to exercise, not only to benefit their health, but also to benefit the health of others through the American Heart Association,” said Scott Rosen, chief operating officer for Equinox. “Equinox is committed to our members’ health, as well as the health of our community. We’re thrilled that our members were able to raise this much for a worthy cause.”
Equinox members walked or ran on Life Fitness Elevationâ„¢ Series treadmills during the event on February 25, 2008. The equipment’s sophisticated system kept track of total mileage and provided exercisers with the tools to easily monitor their own heart rates during the workout.
“Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in America today, so we were thrilled to work with Equinox to raise funds to drive awareness and research on this issue,” said Jay Megna, executive vice president for Life Fitness. “This event provided us with a great opportunity to connect with exercisers on the importance of making the lifelong commitment to fitness.”
