Denver, CO— March 20, 2012 — First Descents, a non-profit organization providing outdoor adventure therapy for young adults with cancer is seeking additional medical volunteers to support its growing line up of programs. Adding new locations and opportunities for the 2012 season, the Denver-based organization will expand its adventures with more than 10 new programs in new locations.

Physicians, mid-level providers (nurses, PA’s, NP’s) and paramedics are encouraged to apply. Each volunteer needs to have a valid and current license in the state the FD program will be taking place and needs to be able to commit to the entire duration of the program.

Volunteering with First Descents provides an opportunity to care for participants, and share in the thrill of a First Descents program first-hand. Volunteers do not need to be skilled in kayaking, climbing or surfing, but they do need to be qualified health care providers and have the desire and time to help.

“Our medical volunteers are an integral part of our programs. Having top notch medical professionals lend their time and expertise helps ensure that we’re providing the safest experience possible for our participants,” says First Descents Programs Director Whitney Lange. “Since we’ve seen so much growth in our number of programs, we’re focused on growing our high-level volunteer pool as well.”

“In my first experience at First Descents I was amazed at the power the experience offers cancer survivors,” says First Descents Medical Director Larry Smith. “Being able to share a love of the outdoors with a group of truly inspirational people is really what it’s all about.”

Individuals interested in donating their time as a medical volunteer or another volunteer position at camp should visit http://firstdescents.org/volunteer-2 for more information and an online application.
