VENTURA, Calif. (July, 2012) — Patagonia Inc., the apparel and gear company, announces the launch of its Spring 2013 collection of board shorts. The Spring 2013 collection of board shorts includes 8 new or redesigned styles, in 45 varying color and print options, and will be available to consumers in early 2013. This impressive new offering of board shorts has been athlete-tested and proven from the barrels of Hawaii to the point breaks of California. The line features several new top-of-the-line styles in lightweight stretch fabrics, and represents everything the company values in design and function – fit, performance and durability.
An important differentiator for Patagonia’s stretch board shorts is the use of mechanical stretch fabric – a technology that offers increased durability over spandex garments. Mechanical stretch is a process in which the stretch properties are woven into the fabrics and undergo a unique finishing process. The result is stretch that remains intact for the life of the garment. Mechanical stretch fabric also helps to essentially eliminate chafing, especially when combined with strategically placed inseams.
“To me the ultimate board short is the one you don’t feel or notice,†notes Walker Ferguson, Patagonia’s field testing manager, “You want to jump in the water and not be thinking about your trunks – it should feel as if they don’t even exist.â€
At the top of the line, Patagonia offer’s the new Stretch Houdini Board Short. Made in the same factory as the company’s most technical alpine jackets, this is Patagonia’s most technical board short to date. The Houdini’s clean design features super-lightweight polyester with two-way mechanical stretch and a contoured pattern, which retains the fabric’s functionality. Fully welded flat seam construction speeds dry time, and the short’s fit is trimmer for better performance in the water. The Stretch Planing Board Short, inspired by the classic Wavefarer, is a lightweight, durable board short with a slimmer silhouette and fast dry times. The Stretch Journeyman Board Short – a favorite with Patagonia’s product testers – is a highly functional board short that doubles as a walk short and is made from a durable polyester stretch ripstop with 50+ UPF sun protection.
“The new collection of board shorts are timeless in their aesthetic,†notes John Rapp, Patagonia surf designer, “They are not designed as a fashion gesture but rather by function and are treated as a real piece of equipment. The board short is not just a piece of clothing – it is a tool for the water.â€
