Cottage Grove, Wis. (July 21, 2009) – Girls On The Run International (GOTRI) is excited to announce that Laurie Halley of Girls on the Run® of Union County, N.C., is the winner of its second annual National Coach of the Year contest sponsored by Horizon Fitness. This honor is awarded to recognize the outstanding efforts of volunteer coaches across the U.S. and Canada.

Halley will be honored at the 2010 Girls on the Run Summit in Austin, Texas, and will also receive a $1,000 award and a new treadmill from Horizon Fitness. Runners-up include Sharon Trimber from Girls on the Run of Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Teju Owoye from Girls on the Run of Charlotte, N.C.

Girls participating in the Spring 2010 program will have the opportunity to nominate their coach for this honor next year. Official entry forms are distributed to the councils each spring. Girls in the program share why their coach deserves to be Coach of the Year by drawing, painting, writing or pasting their feelings on the entry form; creativity is encouraged. The positive things that the girls have to say about their coaches are truly inspiring and show how impactful the program is on these girls’ lives. To see past entries, visit www.GirlsOnTheRun.org.
