January 2017 (Santa Cruz, California) Giro Sport Design, the industry leader in progressive head protection and snow sports optics, set a new precedent in helmet design and snow sports protection with the Avance MIPS helmet design. For the 17/18 winter season, Giro builds on this race foundation with two new race helmets, the Strive MIPS and the Ledge SL MIPS, allowing racers to perform at their best without being distracted by their helmet or goggles. Both helmets will be available Fall 2017 for Strive MIPS MSRP $280 and Ledge SL MIPS MSRP $140 respectively. (both including a chinbar)
“For Giro, being involved in alpine racing is an opportunity to design helmets for the riders who really push the limits. They reach incredibly high speeds and take risks on very hard snow which results in high consequences in the case of a crash,” said Mattia Berardi, Product Line Manager. “This opportunity forces Giro to push the boundaries and challenge the status quo in terms of head protection design and technologies. From this process, amazing alpine racing products are born, but we also learn a lot about energies, materials, design etc. and these fundamentals can be applied to the rest of our line.”
The two new models for the 17/18 winter season, the Strive MIPS and the Ledge MIPS provide affordable protection to all levels of racers, from U.S. Ski Team members to next generation new racers in training.
The Strive™ MIPS provides affordable and revolutionary protection. The helmet borrows the same sleek silhouette with Hammerhead Design from the Avance MIPS but utilizes a stiff, fiberglass shell with an EPP liner that dissipates impact energy. The Hammerhead Design is a revolutionary brow geometry that strategically adds material to areas where gate impacts occur. This prolongs the life of the helmet foam and mitigates forces to the head. The Strive also features MIPS – which can provide more protection in certain impacts by redirecting impact energy. The helmet also includes an easily removable chinbar for added safety when racing technical slalom events. With three shell sizes and six pad sets available, the perfect fit is easily achieved. The Ledge SL™ MIPS is the ultimate slalom helmet. Featuring Hard Shell Construction, In-Form Fit System and a removable chinbar, the Ledge SL MIPS has everything needed to attack any slalom course on the planet. The Ledge SL shows its edge when the chinbar is installed by protecting racers against gate impacts and against angled impact with MIPS – Multi-Directional Impact Protection System. For the off days, remove the chinbar and you have fully functioning everyday helmet for cruising, park riding and freeriding.
Now adorning the heads of US Ski Team members Andrew Weibrecht and Travis Ganong, the reintroduction of Giro to the World Cup race circuit is proof of the brands commitment to racing, speed and safety.
