Glacier Rescue Project Brings Unique Visual Approach to Climate Change

New Non-Profit Leverages Creativity and Visual Communication to Educate and Activate

Denver, Colorado (November 10, 2020) – Newly formed non-profit Glacier Rescue Project leverages creativity and visual communication strategies to drive progress in the fight against climate change. The melting of glacial ice is the most visually indicative sign of climate change, but it unfortunately happens where few live or even visit. For this reason, too few people get the chance to see what climate change actually looks like. By approaching this significant issue through art, design, and other visual media, Glacier Rescue Project believes it can not only show the world what is happening to our glacial and polar regions, but can also create a new identity for these unique areas as epic, exciting places worth protecting.

According to the Glacier Rescue Project’s Founder and new Executive Director, Gus Reynolds, “The idea started after realizing that glaciers exist mostly in some of the most remote places on the planet. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to spend an extended amount of time in Southern Patagonia, and I was completely blown away by not just how incredible the glaciers there were, but also how they were literally melting in front of my eyes. People shouldn’t have to travel to the ends of the earth to see this clear evidence of our changing climate. With that in mind, we determined that visual communication can be an incredibly powerful tool for educating about the alarming rate at which the Earth’s polar regions are melting and what that means.”

For Reynolds and the rest of the Glacier Rescue team, approaching climate change from a visual and design perspective not only affords them a unique approach to a pressing problem, but also creates opportunities to impact and inspire people to recognize the challenge and take individual and collective action. They are also looking to some of the world’s larger brands – especially in the lifestyle apparel and outdoor industries – to forge collaborative messaging that unites their focus on design with outdoor function.

Wesley Brown, Glacier Rescue’s Director of Education, puts it this way, “Our goal is simple. We want to establish a visual identity for glacial melt and climate change that is exciting and can inspire people to take action. This way, we can build on the progress in the environmental world today and influence the way people think about climate change. Few other environmental groups focus on visual marketing the way we do. By approaching climate change this way, we can establish a positive visual identity for glacial and polar regions. For example, a major initiative of ours is Re-Freeze. Coined from the idea that a Re-Freezing world is a recovering world, we can use or platform to communicate through the lens of a future healing planet.”

Ultimately, Glacier Rescue Project believes that presenting the problem of climate change through the visual and creative lens will engage and inspire a new generation of environmentalists to step up and take action.
