Kittery, ME} – Good To-Go, the dehydrated gourmet meal brand known for elevating the expectations of what packaged meals can taste like, won the $50,000 grand prize in Gorham Savings Bank’s LaunchPad competition on June 6th. In its fifth year, 2017’s competition saw nearly 140 applicants from across the state of Maine. Five up-and-coming-entrepreneurs were among the finalists who pitched their small business concepts Tuesday night to a panel of independent judges in a packed USM Hannaford Hall. Good To-Go will use its $50,000 grant to purchase an additional dehydrator, essentially doubling the company’s production capacity.
In the minds of judges Melissa Smith (President & CEO, WEX), Chris Claudio (CEO & founder, Winxnet), and Steve Campbell (CEO, Pro-voke), the company rose to the top for its standout scalability potential.
“We are so excited and honored to have won this grant,” said Jennifer Scism, Good To-Go Co-founder and Chef. “There were some strong pitches at the event, and it was inspiring to hear each brand’s story. A few months ago, while working on our projections for the next 2 years, we realized that we would need to increase production yet again with the rate of our growth. This grant will be used to purchase another dehydrator and enable us to double our production, pretty much overnight.”
The first half of 2017 has been busy for Good To-Go. In January, Outdoor Retailer Daily named Scism one of the Best & Brightest—26 people setting the outdoor industry on fire. In April, the brand’s recently launched Oatmeal won the coveted Backpacker Magazine Editors’ Choice award. And in May, Good To-Go went international with its launch into Canada. Retailers including Mountain Equipment Co-op and Valhalla Pure Outfitters are now selling the dehydrated gourmet meals.
Good To-Go was started by Chef Jennifer Scism and David Koorits. Scism is an award-winning chef and long-time co-owner of Annisa, a nationally recognized restaurant in New York’s Greenwich Village. Her career has long been focused on the importance of good food. She has cooked at NY Times 4-Star rated restaurants, traveled to over 20 countries studying regional foods, and along with her team from Annisa, has beaten the Iron Chef, Mario Batali, on the TV Food Network’s Iron Chef program. It’s safe to say she knows good food. Koorits has spent his career as a wilderness therapy counselor, ski patroller, wildland firefighter and nurse.
