Goose Person Lance Mackey Wins Fourth Straight Iditarod
Canada Goose Sponsored Athlete Makes History in Alaska’s “Last Great Raceâ€
TORONTO (March 18, 2010) – Wearing his custom Constable Parka by Canada Goose and leading his team of 11 dogs, Lance Mackey won a fourth straight Iditarod Dog Sled race in Nome, Alaska, yesterday, becoming the first person to win the race four times consecutively and the second musher in history to finish in less than 9 days.
As a Canada Goose sponsored athlete and official “Goose Person†for the brand, Mackey has worked closely with the Canadian extreme weather outerwear manufacturer for the past several years, lending his expert insight on product design and performance. Canada Goose is launching the Lance Mackey Constable Parka at retail this fall, featuring an oversized fur ruff, authentic “Lance Mackey†drop-down name tag, and outfitted with the same sponsor patches as Mackey’s racing jacket.
“Lance is more than a world-class musher, he is an inspiration to everyone,†said Dani Reiss, president and CEO of Canada Goose. “It has been a true honor to know and get to spend time with him. Lance is the epitome of a Goose Person. We congratulate him on his continued achievements and are proud to be on his team.â€
Just after he competed in his first Iditarod race in 2001, Mackey was diagnosed with life-threatening throat cancer. After undergoing extensive surgery and radiation treatment, which left him with limited mobility in his right arm and his body weakened against the cold, Mackey is now a cancer survivor dedicated to giving others hope for the future. He runs “Mackey’s Comeback Kennel†(www.mackeyscomebackkennel.com), a canine rescue operation and is an internationally renowned motivational speaker.
Mackey relies on Canada Goose to keep him warm while mushing and during the harsh Alaskan winters. He wears several Canada Goose garments during his races, including his customized Constable Parka, the Snow Mantra and a customized bibbed pant.
