Berkeley, CA – GU Energy Gel is proud to announce that Craig Alexander, one of the world’s best triathletes, has selected GU as his exclusive energy gel supplier.
Alexander said, “Just recently I was introduced to GU Energy Gels by a long time advocate of GU, Michellie Jones, at the Ironman 70.3 in Oceanside. GU has been a staple of top performers in triathlon for years, and I’m proud to join forces with their team. I am very much looking forward to the performance boost their products provide. â€
A native of Sydney suburb Cronulla, Alexander has been one of the world’s top multisport athletes since he took up triathlons in 1994. Alexander had a break-out season racing in the United States in 2004, where he won the Accenture Chicago Triathlon, the Los Angeles Triathlon and the US Pro Championships. By 2006, he moved up from World Cup and sprint racing to become dominant at the Half-Ironman distance, winning the Ironman 70.3 World Championships.
2007 saw him routinely demolishing fields at the Half-Ironman distance, winning the Florida, St. Croix, Vineman and Newfoundland 70.3 titles. More impressively, he placed second in the Ironman World Championships in October in his first attempt at Kona.
Beyond his physical talents, Alexander is one of the best-liked and most-respected competitors in the sport of triathlon. Holly Bennett, GU’s Senior Marketing Manager, said, “Craig is a champion in so many respects – he’s a legendarily hard worker, immensely talented, and universally respected. We could not be happier to have him use our products while competing at the sport’s highest level.â€
Alexander plans to use GU Energy Gel products during his busy 2008 campaign, where he has already enjoyed a second-place showing at the Ironman 70.3 California. His race schedule for the rest of the year includes return visits to Kona and Clearwater, 70.3 races at Disney, Vineman and Canada and appearances at other notable tris such as Escape from Alcatraz, Lifetime Fitness and Chicago Accenture.
Brian Vaughan, President of GU Energy Gel, said Alexander’s signing comes at a particularly significant time in the company’s history. “As we stand poised to launch our new Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel, our commitment to the top athletes in endurance sports remains as strong as ever. We’re thrilled for the opportunity to bring Craig on board and supply him with the optimum nutrition to fuel his success.â€
Roctane is GU’s newest energy gel – a specially-formulated high performance gel that has previously been unavailable at retail but has long enjoyed a cult status among pro athletes in the endurance community. The key to Roctane lies in its high concentration of ingredients including branched chain amino acids, histidine, citrates and the amino acid complex OKG – which have been shown to benefit athletes through enhanced energy production, increased muscle-buffering, heightened mental focus and improved recovery. Roctane is specifically designed for use in intense training and competition. It will continue to fuel GU’s roster of professional athletes, and will be available to the public in June 2008.
