DELTA, B.C. (February 5, 2009) – Big-mountain skiers get ready! The Helly Hansen Big Mountain Battle is coming to Squaw Valley USA, Sun Peaks Resort, BC, Stevens Pass Ski Area and Smugglers’ Notch Resort this February/March.
Each race will challenge two-person teams to an intense, three-hour-long big-mountain course designed by Helly Hansen’s big-mountain skier Chris Davenport. First-place teams in each event will win an all-expense-paid trip to Aspen/Snowmass where they’ll square off in the final Battle in the Bowls, March 29th.
“When designing the courses I plan to use as much of the mountains as possible. I really want to encourage skiers to push themselves and explore parts of the mountain they haven’t before,†said Davenport, who has been at the forefront of the sport since winning his first World Extreme Skiing Championship in 1996. He received national media attention in 2007 for successfully summiting and skiing all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks in a single calendar year.
All teams will be tracked using FLAIK GPS, a unique tracking device that provides real time data on each team as they race. The top three teams will be awarded prizes from Helly Hansen, Thule, Rogue Beer, Powder, Dakine, K2, GoPro Cameras, Skull Candy and Smith Optics. Competitors can also win other categories, including Fastest Hike, Most Vertical, Most Runs and Most Lift Rides.
The Squaw Valley USA race will be held Feb. 21; B.C.’s Sun Peaks, Feb. 28; WA’s Stevens Pass, Mar. 14; and VT’s Smugglers’ Notch, Mar. 21. Athletes can register online or at the event. Each event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with registration opening at 8 a.m.
Cost for the event is $75 per team and includes two Helly Hansen Lifa baselayers valued at $45 each. For more info and to sign up go to www.hellyhansen.com/bigmountainbattle.
