Highgear Facebook Challenge to Benefit Big City Mountaineers

For every new fan on Facebook, Highgear will donate $1 to Big City Mountaineers (BCM) outdoor program for under-resourced urban teens up to a total of $2,000.

Research Triangle Park – Starting today, for every new fan on Facebook, Highgear will donate $1 to Big City Mountaineers (BCM) outdoor program for under-resourced urban teens up to a total of $2,000. The “Get Kids Outdoors” Highgear Challenge on Facebook will be ongoing throughout the summer of 2010 and will support BCM’s well known mentoring programs combined with outdoor wilderness expeditions designed specifically for under-resourced urban youth.

“Highgear has been a proud supporter of Big City Mountaineers for many years and we are excited to embark on this new promotion that will help get kids outdoors this summer who would not otherwise be able to do so,” said Mike Hosey, Founder of Highgear. “In return, Highgear benefits from boosting its social media platform, with the ability to reach out to even more fans of our brand on a daily basis.”

“Our friends at Highgear understand how important a week long wilderness expedition is for these teens and have come up with a creative way to not only raise awareness but dollars as well, which is so important to getting more under-resourced teens outside this summer,” said Hillary Harding, BCM Marketing Manager. “We are so appreciative of Highgear’s support and are really excited about signing up 2000 new friends for Highgear.”

Offering a unique 1-to-1 ratio of adults to teens, the BCM program mentors teens age 13 to 18 through transformative outdoor experiences to enrich lives, broaden horizons and instill critical life skills. It cultivates relationships between teens and caring adult mentors and improves teen self-awareness and personal responsibility. The core BCM program is a weeklong expedition at the center of which is a seven-day wilderness backpacking or canoe expedition in which adults and teens work together.

In addition to the “Get Kids Outdoors” donation, Highgear recently donated 50 of their TrailPilot map compasses to BCM so program volunteers can teach kids how to use a compass this summer. “It’s an important initiative for Highgear to be involved with hands-on navigation instruction for our youth in the outdoors,” Hosey added.
