Biddeford, ME., July 31, 2015: Hyperlite Mountain Gear to launch its Summit Pack, Ice Packs and new 140L Duffel bag made from 100% woven Dyneema® on August 14. Dyneema® fibers are among the strongest in the world, are the fibers from which Cuben Fiber is made, and are the foundational technology for all Hyperlite Mountain Gear products.
“This is the most bombproof, waterproof and foolproof fabric available,” says Hyperlite Mountain Gear CEO and adventurer, Mike St. Pierre. “While our existing line of ultralight Cuben Fiber packs are ideal for very active users, the Dyneema® line will better serve the most hardcore athletes who are toughest on their gear.”
Technically classified as ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), Dyneema® is a lightweight high-strength oriented-strand gel spun through a spinneret. These low-density fibers are resistant to most chemicals, UV resistant, fire resistant and self-extinguishing, and they can withstand extreme temperatures. Though practically an indestructible fabric, Dyneema® becomes more stable (no weave shift) when laminated to the Cuben Fiber Hyperlite Mountain Gear currently uses. Plus, it provides the ultralight, watertight characteristics the company’s products are known for.
“DSM Dyneema is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with materials technology, and we look forward to future developments, particularly following its recent acquisition of Cubic Technology,” says St. Pierre. “This is exciting for our company, the industry and its most hardcore users. And we’re thrilled to be furthering our relationship with DSM.”
St. Pierre began dabbling in fully woven Dyneema® fabrics over two years ago when he customized the bottoms and sides of select packs. He then started building packs with the Dyneema® fabrics, which he and a core group of Hyperlite Mountain Gear ambassadors “tested the hell out of” packrafting, ice climbing and canyoneering.
When elite alpinist and ambassador Angela Van Wiemeersch took her first Dyneema®-reinforced Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ice Pack on a climbing expedition to Alaska, she said, the pack exceeded her expectations. She put up a new route, “Thicker For Thieves,” on Alaska’s Mount Hayes and then “dragged it up walls” around North America. “This stuff is durable as hell. Once you go Dyneema®, you can never go back as an adventurer.”
“Our gear is designed to be used hard in the roughest terrain, on the biggest mountains and on the longest trails,” adds St. Pierre. “Our minimalist, ultralight designs are functional, durable and optimized for high performance. Cuben Fiber has already proven to be a great option for the high-end user; woven Dyneema® fabrics just takes that functionality and durability to the next level.”
