Ignik is on a Mission to Create Zero-Waste Outdoor Heat

What started as an ambitious personal journey for outdoor industry veteran Graeme Esarey and his family quickly transformed into a different sort of odyssey. A year after embarking on an attempted sailing expedition of the Northwest Passage, Esarey found himself back at the helm of an outdoor gear company, this time one of his own creation. Ignik was born from a desire to affect real change in an industry rife with disposable, single-use products. The Seattle-based startup makes high quality, environmentally thoughtful heating products for the outdoors, and launches its flagship product, the Gas Growler Deluxe, on October 3.

“The inspiration for Ignik came while we anchored at a whaling camp in the Arctic,” says founder and CEO Graeme Esarey. “It was icebound, starkly beautiful, and a deeply conflicting place. The whalers slept in metal shipping containers, heated with catalytic heaters powered by green one-pound propane bottles. Each bottle provided just about one hour of heat. Needless to say, there were a few used green bottles laying around. I couldn’t see them going anywhere but in the ocean, as the wind, ice, and bears scour the landscape. Lots of hassle and waste for one hour of heat. There has to be a better way.”

The Gas Growler Deluxe is a refillable, long-lasting, zero-waste solution to providing heat in the outdoors. Featuring an insulated five-pound propane tank contained in a rugged and easy to carry case, the Gas Growler Deluxe packs the heating power of five single-use green propane bottles and will easily connect to all of your existing propane-fueled devices. Each tank will last 12 years and can replace hundreds of disposable bottles that would end up in the landfill. Refills can be done at any propane service station for the cost of one single-use green bottle, without the waste. That’s 5X the cooking or heat, for about the cost of one disposable bottle. The Growler’s carrying case is molded to cradle and insulate the tank, which maximizes fuel efficiency and protects the tank from impact.
