The Untamed New England Adventure Race is a four-day expedition adventure race located in the Maine wilderness June 19-24. It is a qualifier for the Adventure Racing World Championship and includes mountain biking, trail running, off-trail trekking, orienteering, and new for this year: packrafting.
Packrafting involves a raft that can handle nearly any body of water, double as a shelter or cargo ship, and slim down to a mere 4-5 lbs. that can be carried as a backpack. They are extremely versatile as they can easily be repaired in the field and inflate within five minutes.
This year, Jackson Hole Packraft will be sponsoring TeamSOG in the New England Adventure Race by supplying four rafts to the team. This innovative company offers consumers an outlet to rent packrafts for any period of time in the United States. Jackson Hole Packraft rents the rafts nationwide and operates out of their store in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, but the inspiration and design came from Northern Alaska Packrafts based out of Fairbanks.
The team will use the rafts to cross the extremely rugged terrain through the Maine Mountains by helping to transport equipment and supplies with them throughout their trek. The rafts also make for ample shelter as they can serve as a roof and ground pad for a quick, impromptu campsite. They are one person crafts that can adapt to carry a mountain bike, perfect for adventure races.
TeamSOG is sponsored and managed by American Adventure Sports based out of Indiana, PA. The team for this June consists of Captain Brian Mayer, Scott Pleban, Kristin Eddy and Toby Angove. This race has attracted a lot of attention and teams as far away as Ecuador, Sweden and Denmark are participating. The race has filled up quickly and the final roster will include forty-five, four person teams that include three males and one female.
