On June 1, Kokatat-sponsored Dutch sea kayakers Paul de Haas and Marian Makelaar will set off from the coast of Iceland in an attempt to become the first Dutch team to circumnavigate the entire coastline.
The husband and wife team, known simple as the “Dutchseakayakers,” will attempt to complete the circumnavigation in just two months.
“We first traveled around Iceland in our Land Rover back in 2005; now we’ve come back to hopefully see the entire coastline from our kayaks” Haas said.
Haas and Makelaar will be outfitted in Kokatat GORE-TEX® dry suits and personal floatation devices (PFDs), to keep them warm, dry and safe on their frozen journey. Their main opponent will be the weather as they paddle through merciless open seas without any form of escape. The Dutchseakayakers will face high surf swells, jagged coastlines and the desolation of the south coast that has virtually no inhabitants.
Haas and Makelaar have kayaked the Channel Islands, Scotland and Anglesey. In 2009, they achieved their long-held goal of circumnavigating Ireland; the couple then set their sights on the challenging seas of Iceland.
