Kokatat, a 38-year-old, independent paddlewear and accessories company, is proud to sponsor “Tierra del Fuego,” the latest expedition from sea kayakers Marcus Demuth and Biff Wruszek. On December 16th, 2009, the pair will set out to the southernmost tip of Patagonia to attempt the first circumnavigation of Isla Grande Tierra del Fuego – South America’s largest island. Demuth and Wruszek will use this expedition to raise funds and awareness for an athletics-based non-profit.

Kokatat is supplying the team with everything from life jackets to dry suits, insulation, and paddling shoes. “Kokatat has supported Marcus on two other expeditions and we fully back his adventurous spirit and philanthropic efforts,” said Michael Duffy, Kokatat’s director of marketing. “We know when Marcus picks an expedition it’s guaranteed to put some incredible demands on our product. Our GORE-TEX Expedition dry suits were at the top of Marcus and Biff’s gear list,” Duffy said.

This 60 day expedition will start from the southernmost city in the world – Ushuaia, Argentina – where Demuth and Wruszek will complete the 1,000-mile trip in a counter-clockwise direction, paddling in one of the harshest maritime climates in the world.

Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, called the “uttermost part of the Earth” by 1800’s-era explorer Lucas Bridges, is thought to be one of toughest coastlines in the world.

“We’re certain to experience the beauty of the 100-mile-wide Cordillera Darwin; the abundant maritime wildlife; and the charm of the Patagonian people living in this remote region,” Demuth said. “But most of all we are proud to affiliate this expedition with ‘Achilles,’ a non-profit based out of our hometown New York,” Demuth added.

Achilles is a non-profit that enables people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics. The expedition will raise funds and awareness, and collect gently-used paddling gear, for the organization’s participants.
