January 24th, 2014, Copper Mountain Ski Resort, CO– Bad to the Bone Endurance Sports, a leader in the event production industry and the company behind the Ultra Race of Champions, is proud to announce the creation of La Maratona Verticale (The Vertical Marathon), an European style race which will take place on iconic Copper Mountain. La Maratona Verticale was created as a partnership with the International Skyrunning Federation (ISF) for their highly publicized US Skyrunner Series®. The International Skyrunning Federation promotes high altitude mountain running and is based in Northern Italy. The ISF has a long history of conducting extreme running events in iconic mountain towns all over the World, therefore making Copper Mountain, Colorado the perfect host for La Maratona Verticale.
La Maratona Verticale will be part of the US Skyrunner Series® and take place on July 26th and 27th, 2014. The course will take place within the Copper Mountain boundaries and include many of the slopes and recreation trails, ascending and descending from the surrounding peaks with over 12,000 feet of elevation gain in 26.2 miles (42 kilometers) and will include a Half Marathon and Vertical K. Only the full Marathon and Vertical K will count toward the US Skyrunner Series® points. The mountain course and its iconic location make it perfectly suited to capture the style and culture of Skyrunning races.
“We were thrilled when the International Skyrunning Federation approached us to help with the expansion of their events across the United States” says Gill, CEO of Bad to the Bone Endurance Sports. “The ISF’s philosophy is a perfect match for Bad to the Bone, which is dedicated to creating the most memorable running experiences possible. La Maratona Verticale will both challenge and inspire mountain runners from all over the World. We have designed a monster course on Copper Mountain. Runners in La Maratona Verticale will ascend a combination of trails and slopes to several of the surrounding peaks, making this a true high altitude mountain running challenge”.
“Copper Mountain is excited to showcase the drastic views of the Ten Mile Range and the rugged terrain that exists in the summer months” says Jesse True, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Copper Mountain. “The US Skyrunner Series® and La Maratona Verticale racers will be running through The 12’s, three peaks above twelve thousand feet that make up Copper Mountains high alpine terrain”.
“With the new US Skyrunner Series® we want to capture the pure style of high altitude mountain running which Skyrunner has embodied in Europe for two decades” says Ian Sharman, US Skyrunner Series® Director. “Copper Mountain is an ideal location with alpine, rugged terrain and spectacular scenery, so we’re very excited that La Maratona Verticale has been created specifically for the Series by experienced race directors. The marathon traverses several mountain peaks in one of the toughest courses in the world, sure to inspire runners and spectators alike”.
