La Maratona Verticale Runs to the Sky and Beyond at Copper Mountain this Weekend

COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. – July 22, 2014 – Elite runners from all over the globe make their way to Copper Mountain for the La Maratona Verticale, a part of the 2014 US SkyRunning Series on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 & 27. La Maratona Verticale at Copper Mountain will feature a full (26.2 Miles- 42k) and a half (13.1 Miles- 21k) marathon on Saturday, July 26 starting at 6 a.m. and a Vertical K (3 miles- 5k) on Sunday, July 27 at 9 a.m. The Vertical Marathon will have over 10,000 feet of elevation gain over 13.1 miles and the Vertical K will gain over 4,000 feet over the 3 mile ascent.

Guests are encouraged to cheer on the competing elite runners and world champions including: Chris Grauch, Eric Grossman, Jim Rebenack, John Tribbia, Simon Gutierrez, Sara Wagner and Stevie Kremer. For easy viewing all races start in Burning Stones Plaza before making their way uphill. Starting at 10 a.m. guests can use the American Eagle Chairlift, with purchase of a summer lift pass, to view the race from Solitude Station on mountain.

La Maratona Verticale Running Expo will fill Burning Stones Plaza both days and feature Vertical Running Breckenridge, Salomon Footwear, Runner’s Roost Denver, Naked Juice, and City on a Hill Coffee.

SkyRunning, or high altitude running, is defined as the discipline of mountain running up to or exceeding 2,000 meters. The sport is comprised of a number of different disciplines from the short, steep Vertical Kilometer® to the more popular SkyRace® and Ultra SkyMarathon®.
