Stamford, Connecticut – The stage is set for the upcoming Arc’teryx Bozeman Ice ClimbingFestival, December 11-15, and LOWA, known worldwide for their climbing and mountaineering boots, will be visible front and center. They are co-presenting the Festival’s 2013 U.I.A.A. Open North American Ice Climbing Championships, December 14-15; sponsoring the Speed Climbing Championship on Sunday afternoon, the 15th; and hosting a clinic in between competitions by four-time World Ice Climbing Champion and LOWA athlete, Ines Papert. Last but certainly not least, festival participants are invited to the LOWA tent to check out and demo their world-class German-made boots including the Weisshorn GTX, Ice Comp IP GTX, Mountain Expert GTX and Latok GTX.
The U.I.A.A. Open North American Ice Climbing Championships will start with a Saturday afternoon preliminary in Lead Difficulty featuring Olympic caliber athletes from the U.S., Canada and Europe. This will be followed by the Finals and then festivities on Main Street Bozeman that same evening. The Speed Climbing Championship will take place Sunday afternoon. Those climbers that make it to the podium will split a $3000 purse provided by LOWA. The boot tent team will be led by LOWA representatives, Gordon Lehmann and Christian McConnell. LOWA ambassador, Carlos Buhler, will be a special guest and on hand to answer questions, teach classes and lead climbs.
Carlos knows a thing or two about climbing. With major ascents on five continents, including the first (and only) ascent of Mt. Everest via the east Kangshung Face from Tibet, Carlos is considered one of the most accomplished mountain climbers in the world. His specialty is high-standard mountaineering characterized by small teams, no oxygen, minimal gear and equipment on ascents of difficult routes in challenging conditions. There is no doubt that he will be able to give Ice Climbing Festival climbers valuable information on LOWA boots and tips on climbing in general.
The Bozeman Ice Climbing Festival was founded in 1996 and is dedicated to promoting and protecting the world-class ice climbing of Hyalite Canyon. The event is a huge draw for athletes and participants looking for a myriad of clinics, demos, gear and evening entertainment. Proceeds from the Festival go directly to the Friends of Hyalite, a 501(c)3 organization that supports winter access into Hyalite Canyon for ice climbing.
