Mammut Athlete Vasya Vorotnikov Wins UBC Pro Tour EMS Pro in Central Park
New York City, NY (June 30, 2011)-Mammut, the Swiss quality providers of alpine gearand apparel are pleased to announce that Mammut Team USA athlete Vasya Vorotnikov won the first-ever pro climbing competition in New York’s Central Park this past weekend. The Eastern Mountain Sports Pro on Saturday, June 25th, 2011 was the second of four stops on The Unified Bouldering Championships Pro Tour.
Besting a field of extremely skilled and polished climbers, Vasya placed first ahead of Ty Landman, Mike Feinberg.
“The finals in Central Park were a perfect example of where climbing is headed: large crowds, mostly people who have never even seen climbing, big good-looking climbing walls that were exciting to watch, great setting and presentation, and of course, announcing.” Vorotnikov says.
The UBC recap states that “Thousands and thousands of New Yorkers gathered near Sheep Meadow and witnessed an amazing display of athleticism and drama from the world’s best climbers. The crowd collectively held their breath, gasped, screamed and fist pumped the competitors to their absolute limits. Feeding off the crowd’s infectious energy, Vasya Vorotnikov and Angie Payne turned in inspired performances and snagged mens and womens first place victories.”
“It was awesome to win the competition,” Vorotnikov says, “but it meant more to me to see thousands of non-climbers in the crowd. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the crowd in the finals, I wouldn’t be able to get up #1 or #2 as I finished those with no time left on the clock! #3 felt my style, but still left me stunned with a big-stage victory.”
Vorotnikov, 24 years old, is originally from Moscow, Russia and currently lives in Delaware .
Vorotnikov plans to compete in the final two stops of the UBC Pro Tour in Salt Lake City at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market on August 4-6 and in the North Face Pro on September 24-25 in Burlington, VT.
