Mammut Athletes Shine at Earth Treks UBC Pro Tour Event
Timonium, MD (April 24th, 2010) – Mammut climbing athletes made some noise this week on the first stop of the 2010 UBC Pro Tour at Earth Treks in Timonium, MD on April 24th. With $11,000 in prize money on the line, Alex Johnson snagged a 2nd place finish, and Vasya Vorotnikov and Magnus Midtboe stirred up the men’s field with a 4th and 6th place respectively.
Newly-signed Mammut athlete Alex Johnson defeated favorite Lisa Rands by 6 points and trailed event winner Alex Puccio by only 2 points at the Pro Event. Having recently returned from her first Mammut trip to Sheffield, England, Johnson noted that “While fatiguing, I loved the red-point format of this comp. I think I had even more fun at this event because it felt like just hanging with your friends in a competition atmosphere.†In addition to her perspective on the Earth Treks event, Johnson went on to add, “I was so honored to be invited on the team trip to England, and placing in this comp really validates my decision to sign with Mammut and be a part of a great team of climbers and involved in the real action of the sport.â€
The men’s competition also highlighted the talent and tenacity of Vasya Vorotnikov and Magnus Midtboe as they chased legend Chris Sharma throughout the day on insanely difficult problems. The 22 year old Vorotnikov posted a 4th place finish, losing 3rd to Daniel Woods by a single attempt. “I think I represented Mammut the best I ever have,†Vorotnikov explained in an interview, “I was so psyched to be up there with the best climbers in the world.†One of those athletes was Norwegian Magnus Midtboe, also climbing for Mammut who finished the Pro Event in 6th place.
Following the Maryland event, the athletes have a couple months to train for the next stops on the 2010 UBC Pro Tour. The second stop will occur at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Show in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 2nd-4th, and the Unified Bouldering Championships will be held later this year at a yet-to-be-disclosed location.
