Mammut Mourns Loss of Athlete and Pioneer Jack Roberts

Shelburne, VT (January 18th, 2012) – Mammut, the Swiss quality providers of alpine gear and apparel, regretfully acknowledges the passing of Mammut Sports Group Team athlete/ambassador Jack Roberts. The veteran climber and author was leading a climb at Bridal Veil Falls near Telluride, CO on Sunday when he fell, injuring his hip and possibly sustaining internal injuries, according to San Miguel County. He survived the fall off the fabled ice climb, but succumbed to cardiac arrest after rescue workers arrived.

The 59-year-old Roberts had been a climber for more than 40 years, and was well known and respected within the climbing community as a guide and instructor. Roberts had been the operator of Jack Roberts Climbing Adventures for the last 10 years and in 2006 wrote what many consider the definitive guide to Colorado ice climbing. Characterized by Climbing Magazine editor and friend Dougald MacDonald as “the ultimate hardman”, Roberts had climbed in Alaska, Yosemite, Canada and Europe. He resided in Boulder, Colorado where he met his wife Pam in 1984.

Mammut Sports Group Athlete Team Manager Dean Lords commented, “Jack has been part of the Mammut family for just over a decade. His career as an athlete, guide, first ascentionist, and author, among other things is a timeline of inspiration and vision around the world. Jack was an incredibly talented climber and guide who tirelessly shared his passion with clients of all abilities. He was a continual influence of motivation and love for life in a vertical world; living up to the ideal that it’s not so much about what you’ve got but what you give.” Lords added, “ Jack gave back to the climbing world. His enthusiasm and kindness will be deeply missed at Mammut.”
The Mammut family expresses their collective sorrow at Jack’s passing. Information on any memorial activities or plans for contributions can be submitted to Dean Lords at deanlords@gmail.com.
