Mammut’s Lobuche Jacket and Gym System Win ISPO Outdoor Awards

Mammut, the Swiss quality providers of alpine gear and apparel, has been recognized for innovation and quality once again by ISPO, the international outdoor and sporting goods trade show. The ISPO show, which also spotlights sport style and fashion, was held February 1st through 4th in Munich, Germany. Mammut took two of only six awards granted, one for the new ultralight, super breathable Lobuche weatherproof jacket implementing a new membrane technology, and one for the Gym System, a user-friendly solution for climbing gym operators and climbers themselves.

The Lobuche jacket is among Mammut’s newest crop of weatherproof, “hard” shell innovations, in which an electro-spinning technology – a process using an electrical field to apply a weave of nano fibers to the outer material – is used to bond the waterproof-breathable membrane to the outer shell fabric without the use of glue or seams. The absence of an adhesive layer renders the jacket more than twice as breathable as traditional hardshell membrane fabrics. Known for continued innovations in alpine and snow outerwear, Mammut has produced its most breathable jackets and pants to date. The Lobuche and its women’s-specific mate, the Nanda Devi, jacket and pants will be available for Fall 2009.

Mammut’s Gym System was chosen for its “ease of operation, durability, and the application of additional safety features”, as well as its durability. As climbing gym equipment must withstand the high-frequency wear of daily use innumerable falls, the ISPO award panel found the system outstanding “due to its technical solutions in combination with simple, intuitive operation.”

The awards follow a legacy of innovations from Mammut, honored at a recent ISPO summer trade show for the Qogir jacket, and sweeping last summer’s OutDoor tradeshow Innovation awards across three categories for their Mamook Mountaineering boot, Smart belay device, and Shield waterproof sleeping bag.
