Mammut’s Newest Athlete Storms Into ABS Nationals

Canadian Climbing Phenom grabs title on American Soil

Boulder, CO (February 17, 2011) – Newly-signed Mammut athlete Sean McColl jumped the border this past weekend to stampede his way into1st place at the American Bouldering Series Nationals in Boulder, CO. The event featured many of the world’s finest vying for the title, but the 23 year old Canadian flashed his 3rd problem to walk away with top honors. Alex Johnson, another Mammut athlete , finished in 4th place at the competition in a very competitive women’s field.

Following the competition, McColl posted the following on his extensive blog of the weekend, “Words can’t really explain how happy I felt, or maybe my English vocabulary just isn’t varied enough, but I felt like I was walking on the moon.” His first and second attempts on the men’s problems resulted in peel-offs, but he stepped up and flashed the final problem, exulting from the top to the crowds below, with his Canadian friends watching the live stream at home.

McColl claims that “pushing standards since 1987” is his motto – but he’s racked up some seriously impressive climbs, including a second ascent of Chris Sharma’s classic “Dreamcatcher” (5.14d/9a) on McColl’s home turf of Squamish, British Columbia. A speedy ascent of “PuntX” (5.14d/9a), an overhanging test of strength completed in just 1 minute 40 seconds in Gorges du Loup, France, established McColl as force to be reckoned with abroad.

In bouldering, McColl also ranks among the best. Sending “Mandala SDS” (8b+/V.10+), “Goldfish Trombone” (8b+/V10+), “Alsan” (8b+/V10+), several 8a+/V.10 bouldering flashes and more than 100 other boulder problems 8a/V.10 and harder, McColl is stomping through the goals he has set for himself. With 17 rankings among the top 10 in previous World Cup competitions, 9 of which were in the finals, and several podium places, McColl will be one to watch in the upcoming World Cup, as well as in his personal climbing season.

After a brief period of rest, McColl will begin preparation for the Canadian Nationals this spring in Burlington, Ontario.
