The X-Zoom is the second Mammut headlamp to earn Backpacker’s prestigious and coveted Editor’s Choice designation, on the heels of the Mammut TX-1 headlamp claiming the title just last year. The X-Zoom is one of many headlamps offered by Mammut, and features a variable zoom function offering a wide selection of range and field of view. According to Backpacker, “This groundbreaking model adjusts form broad flood to tightly focused spot with a twist of the wrist, so it does it all – from nailing a trail sign a hundred yards out to lighting a book without blinding youâ€.
When honoring Mammut with the award at the recent Outdoor Retailer Winter Market tradeshow,
Backpacker editors summarized their choice, saying “you would need to carry several headlamps to do what the X-Zoom does, or you could just carry the X-Zoom – it’s that versatile.â€
“This year’s winners withstood the most rigorous testing process yet,†said Editor-In-Chief Jonathan Dorn. “Our test team started off with over 50 new products, narrowing them down to a final 25 after months of trail-testing. The finalists were then taken on extreme outdoor adventures both in the mountains and on the coast of Wales, enduring a streak of epic weather conditions from wind-whipped days to rain-soaked nights…Those that survived have earned the distinction of becoming the 2009 Editors’ Choice Award Winners.â€
“It’s great to see such a trusted source and team of experts acknowledging that Mammut is bringing something new, unique, and truly functional to the headlamp category,†said Mike Welch, National Sales Manager for Mammut USA. “Receiving Editor’s Choice two years in a row for two of our lights reinforces Mammut as a provider of headlamps for a wide range of activities and end-users.â€
The X-Zoom headlamp and Mammut alpine and snow outerwear, climbing gear, apparel and accessories can be found at specialty retailers nationwide. The X-Zoom retails for $99.95.
Mammut also received recent honors for innovation and quality at ISPO, the international trade show for outdoor sports industry manufacturers. Mammut’s new ultralight, super breathable Lobuche weatherproof jacket won an ISPO Outdoor Award for implementing a new membrane technology, as did the new Gym System, a user-friendly solution for climbing gym operators and climbers themselves.

Backpacker’s Editors’ Choice Awards, an industry honor recognizing design, feature and product innovation, has become the gold standard against which all other outdoor-industry awards are measured. And the magazine recently launched mobile media applications that allow users to text-message hiking maps and directions to their phones. In 2008, Backpacker won the magazine industry highest honor, the National Magazine Award for General Excellence, joining The New Yorker, Mother Jones, GQ, and National Geographic as top winners in their respective size categories. It has won numerous other print, design, and digital awards, and its writers have been recognized in prestigious contests and best-of-the-year anthologies.
