Mammut: Smart Belay Device Wins red dot design award

Swiss mountain sports specialist Mammut has earned itself a coveted red dot design award for its Smart belay device. No fewer than 1400 companies from 49 countries vied for one of the prestigious prizes landed by Mammut. A jury of internationally renowned experts selected the Smart over 3231 entries.

The design of the Smart reflects every detail of its function and innovation. Its technical, minimalist and dynamic design lends it unique character. The focus is clearly on safety and ease-of-use, as demonstrated by the graphics that are integrated into the device to prevent user error. “The focus is on the user; the Smart’s ergonomics are a good example of dynamic design. Demonstrating understated sensitivity, the device provides support precisely where it can best serve the climber,” declares the red dot jury. “The aesthetics and usability of the competing products in the Sport and Games category are exceptional, and all are of high quality.” Mammut is proud of what it has achieved with its Smart.

The Smart belay device is quick and easy to use and perfect for lead and top-rope climbing using a single rope. Developed especially for the growing numbers of indoor and sports climbers, the ingenious Smart provides dynamic braking in the event of a fall, but blocks on sensing even a small amount of force from the belayer. This makes it ideal for partners of different weights. The Smart is designed to respond to the reflexes of the human body: its functionality is not impaired, even if the belayer reacts inappropriately to a fall by jerking at the rope or tensing up. The Smart is compatible with all the most common HMS carabiners and single ropes with a diameter of 8.9-10.5 mm and has won the Outdoor Industry Award.
