Rohnert Park (CA): In a unique collaboration now in its third year, Marmot, together with Grassroots Outdoor Alliance (Grassroots), a buying group of 47 independent specialty retailers with nearly 100 store fronts across the United States, have raised significant funds and awareness for one of the most important environmental organizations in the outdoor industry—the Conservation Alliance. Promoted through Grassroots retailers, throughout last November, $10 from the sale of any Marmot products—$99.00 or more—were donated to the Conservation Alliance. The net effect totaled $10,000.

“We’ve enjoyed working with Grassroots on this promotion every season,” explains Tom Fritz, Marmot’s Vice President of Marketing. “This November marks our third consecutive year collaborating with Grassroots and together we’ve raised more than $25,000 for the Conservation Alliance. It’s one of most successful promotions we’ve done to benefit an organization.”

Roanne Miller, Grassroots President adds, “The Conservation Alliance has a similar mission to that of Grassroots and our retail membership. Our organizations both focus on engaging businesses to fund and partner with organizations on the local level to protect wild places and recreational values.”

Miller also adds, “Working with The Conservation Alliance and Marmot allows us to broaden our reach to help bigger national projects that we want to support. Marmot’s partnership and generosity to help coordinate the promotion shows their commitment not only to conservation efforts but to helping support the independent outdoor specialty retailer.”

Participating Grassroots stores that helped to make the promotion a success in 2013 were: Alpine Shop, Ltd., Appalachian Outfitters, Backcountry North, Bill Jackson’s, Black Creek Outfitters, The Base Camp, Casual Adventures, Champaign Surplus, Diamond Brand, Eagle Eye Outfitters, Massey’s Professional Outfitters, Midwest Mountaineering, Mountain Chalet, Mountain High Outfitters, The Mountaineer, Outdoor Source, Outside Hilton Head, The Outside World, Pack Rat Outdoor Center, Peak Sports, River Sports Outfitters, Rock Creek Outfitters, Skinny Skis, Summit Hut, Summit Canyon Mountaineering, Trailblazer, Travel Country Outdoors, Ute Mountaineer, Wild Iris Mountain Shop and Wilson’s Eastside Sports.

About the Conservation Alliance:

The Conservation Alliance is an organization of outdoor businesses whose collective contributions support grassroots environmental organizations and their efforts to protect wild places where outdoor enthusiasts recreate. Alliance funds have played a key role in protecting rivers, trails, wildlands and climbing areas.

Membership in the Alliance is open to companies representing all aspects of the outdoor industry, including manufacturers, retailers, publishers, mills and sales representatives. The result is a diverse group of businesses whose livelihood depends on protecting our natural environment.

Since its inception in 1989, the Alliance has contributed more than $8.3 million to grassroots environmental groups. Alliance funding has helped save over 49.5 million acres of wildlands; 27 dams have either been stopped or removed; and the group helped preserve access to more than 17,000 miles of waterways and several climbing areas.
