Santa Rosa, (CA): Marmot Mountain, LLC has just won Outside magazine’s 2011 “Gear of the Year†award for the Plasma 15 goose down sleeping bag ($469). Marmot’s new 900-fill ultra light bag, which was “torture tested†by Outside editors over several months, received a ‘best in class’ review from gear tester, Fredrick Reimers. The sleeping bag, together with the prestigious award, will appear in a two-page spread in Outside’s Spring/Summer Buyer’s Guide later this month, reaching 1.3 million readers and remaining on newsstands throughout summer.
“The Plasma 15 has been one of those truly satisfying projects to work on. We achieved the goal of creating the lightest, most packable sleeping bag possible without sacrificing features, comfort or durability,†explains Wade Woodfill, Marmot’s Category Merchandising Manager for equipment and the visionary for Marmot’s ultra light series bags, which includes the Plasma 30 ($419)—another award-winning sleeping bag in the collection.
“This has been a real team-effort between Marmot’s in-house design group, Pertex® fabrics and Insotect® technologies†explains Woodfill, who is developing Marmot’s new ultra light sleeping bag collection with a unique combination of cutting edge fabrics and technologies. Both the Plasma 15 and 30 shells are sewn-up with Pertex© Quantum 10d fabric—hailed by Reimers as “Kleenex-thin but Kryptonite-toughâ€. The unique Insotect® Flow vertical baffle system optimizes thermal efficiency, assuring uniform body heat flow. “The baffles contour to your body, maximizing thermal efficiency and isolating the goose down, which helps to avoid cold spots,†adds Woodfill.
“What set the Plasma 15 apart was its remarkable warmth and features-to-weight ratio,†chimes Sam Moulton, Editor Outside Buyer’s Guide. “You might be able to find another 15 degree bag this light, but not one as roomy and comfy with a full-zip—and with all the bells and whistles,†he adds.
