Denver, Colo. – Merrell, manufacturer of outdoor and casual footwear and apparel, has donated 300 pairs of hiking boots to 501(c)3 nonprofit Big City Mountaineers (BCM), whose mission is to “enhance the lives of under-resourced urban teens through transformative outdoor experiences.” The sizable donation is enough to give a pair of boots to each teen on BCM’s projected 50 weeklong wilderness expeditions in 2010.
“The teenagers on BCM expeditions come to us with no outdoor gear whatsoever; understandable as most have never been outside the city,” said BCM executive director Syd Jones. “It’s on us to make sure our teens are properly clothed and outfitted to enjoy and appreciate their outdoor experience. Our friends at Merrell understand that high quality footwear is critical to opening the door to the outdoors; the more our teens get outside, especially those who haven’t been, the better the world will be. The Merrell footwear will literally carry them into an experience that could change their lives forever.”
Big City Mountaineers will deliver 50 wilderness expeditions in summer 2010, in California, Colorado, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the Pacific Northwest, providing outdoor experiences for teens from the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Portland, Denver, Colorado Springs, Minneapolis and Chicago.
“Merrell is excited to be partnering with Big City Mountaineers in their purpose of getting more kids outside,” said Matt DeWitte, Marketing Manager at Merrell. “Our goal is to equip BCM with the right gear so that kids continue to be passionate about getting outside long after they return from their trips.”
