SAN FRANCISCO (September 16, 2008) â€” On September 13th, Merrell opened its first flagship store in San Francisco. Located at 285 Geary Street in the world-renowned Union Square shopping district, the store features 2,400 square feet of retail space filled with men’s and women’s footwear, apparel, accessories and kid’s shoes. With multiple community outreach programs in place, the store is set to become host to an interactive community by serving as a meeting spot for outdoor enthusiasts to come together and interact.
â€œHaving a flagship store in the heart of San Francisco’s premiere shopping district is the first part of the equation,â€ said Seth Cobb, VP and General Manager of Merrell. â€œBuilding a relationship with the city’s outdoor community and organizations is the other. By partnering with key organizations that represent Merrell’s active outdoor image, we’ll quickly form close ties with consumers and retailers alike by becoming a recognizable company with a mission to serve the local community. Currently, we have partnerships secured with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, the San Francisco Triathlon Club and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.â€
To showcase its commitment to protecting the outdoors while inspiring and equipping people to get outside, Merrell concentrated on creating key partnerships with local, like-minded San Francisco organizations. By donating a combination of money, services and meeting space, Merrell will lend its support to the area groups and its outdoor-focused citizens. Though the company plans to expand these relationships to other like-minded groups in the Bay Area, the current partnerships include the following organizations:
Â· San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department â€“ Merrell has donated funds earmarked for trail maintenance within the San Francisco Park system in Golden Gate Park’s Strawberry Hill area. The donation will pay for trail maintenance, materials and labor. Additionally, employees of the Merrell store will serve as part of the clean-up team to maintain the trail. As the trail maintenance progresses, Merrell employees will post photos of the development on the in-store community board so consumers can see the progression.
Â· San Francisco Triathlon Club â€“ Merrell has partnered with the San Francisco Triathlon Club (SFTC) to help support its various groups such as â€œ0-60â€ and the â€œIronmanâ€ training groups. To initiate the partnership, Merrell has donated funds to the organization and will immediately begin working with the club’s members, offering them in-store discounts and will offer the store as a home base for packet-pick up, meetings and training sessions.
Â· San Francisco Bicycle Coalition â€“ Merrell has committed funds to support the work and programs of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC), an organization dedicated to promoting bicycles for an every day mode of transportation for all San Franciscans. Kicking off this fall, Merrell plans to work with the Bicycle Coalition in a multitude of ways including: sponsoring a part of the annual Winterfest event and hosting SFBC events at the Merrell store. Future partnership activities to be announced in the Merrell store and on the community board.
Â· Bay Area Wilderness Training â€“ Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) works to get at-risk and underprivileged youth outdoors to experience California’s nature and adventures first hand. In the past Merrell has worked closely with the BAWT group and in 2009 plans to expand its partnership and delve into further opportunities. More details to be announced in the coming year.
â€œWe envision the Merrell flagship store as a place to present opportunities for community involvement with local organizations and for customers to showcase their outdoor motivations and get inspired by other local San Franciscan’s,â€ said Shane Dykhuis, Community Events Manager of Merrell San Francisco. â€œThe store will serve as a key meeting point and information hub for the local active outdoor community through a community board and a computer internet access station. At that spot, employees and customers will be invited to research and post information on local outdoor events, Merrell store happenings and even share meaningful quotes, pictures of recent trips and their own daily inspirations.â€
In celebration of the flagship store, Merrell is planning a VIP grand opening party on October 23, hosted by Team Merrell Captain Robyn Benincasa a world-renowned triathlete and adventure racer. The event will be attended by local San Francisco influencers and community leaders, press and Merrell executives. All those who attend the event on their bicycle will receive an in-store discount for the night. In partnership with the San Francisco Bike Coalition, Merrell will offer a bike valet as opposed to a car valet to encourage people to get outside and reduce the impact on the environment.
